CHARLESTON, W. VA.- Several members of Homeland Security Investigations ( HSI ) Charleston have recently received recognition from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia for their work in reducing crime in that state. In May 2023, two separate ceremonies in Charleston honored the HSI Charleston specific agencies and support staff.
At the West Virginia State Capitol Building’s monthly Crime Victims Assistance Awards Ceremony on May 9, HSI Charleston Special Agent Brian Morris was honored for his research into a former law enforcement officer who had recently been found guilty of sexual prostitution and restriction costs. The person was found guilty as a result of Morris’ analysis, and his victim was located and saved.
Morris, the president of the West Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force, was also honored for his extensive knowledge of cases involving human trafficking and his outreach efforts, which have significantly increased public awareness of this practice in the state.
Derek W. Gordon, special agent in charge of HSI Charleston, expressed his gratitude for the recognition of so many of his particular agencies and support staff for their excellent investigative work. ” These incredible law enforcement officers really go above and beyond in their studies to make our West Virginia communities safer places.” They represent hundreds of different HSI federal law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to protect our societies, and HSIA Washington, D.C. is glad to have them among our ranks.
At the Robert C. Byrd U. S. Courthouse in Charleston on May 17, four law enforcement officers from HSI Charleston were also honored for their contributions to Project Safe Childhood at the Southern District of West Virginia 2023 Law Enforcement Awards.
For their job in the research into a former elementary school consultant, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia recognized the work of HSI Charleston Special Agent Terrance Taylor, Computer Forensic Analyst Leland” Fred” Pickering, forensic exam professional Candice Cooper, and legal analyst Chris Powell. For attempting to produce child sex and to entice a minor, the therapist was given the death penalty of 25 years in prison. Michelle Shaffer, a soldier with the West Virginia State Police, was even honored for her involvement in the inquiry.
The suspect targeted several young women using the Snapchat instant messaging app, according to the HSI Charleston analysis. Through his work as a college counselor, he was familiar with several of the small girls. After HSI Charleston searched his home and seized several digital devices containing child sex abuse stuff, the suspect allegedly obstructed righteousness by deleting the Snapchat consideration he used to carry out these activities.
These people protect our societies on a daily basis. According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson, they stand for the principles of regulation protection. ” Through these honours, we specifically seek to recognize collaborative efforts, such as joint investigations or partnerships established to lead criminal justice activities.”
The Department of Justice launched Project Safe Childhood in 2006 as a national effort to combat the rising epidemic of child sexual abuse and misuse. In addition to identifying and rescuing patients, Project Safe Childhood marshals resources from the federal, state, and local levels to find, grasp and pursue online child abusers.
