A Mexican federal was given a 10-year federal prison sentence in Galveston, Texas, on July 11 for his involvement in smuggling drugs in multiple states. This was the result of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force research by Homeland Security Investigations Galveston and the drug Enforcement Administration Houston.

Juan Gonzalez-Cardebas, a 56-year-old Mexican national who is legally residing in the United States, was found guilty of conspiracy to maintain with the intent to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine and one to more kg of heroin, as well as possession of drugs totaling eight to ninety. Gonzalez was found guilty of the accusations in August 2022.

Operation Wrecking Ball, the analysis that resulted in his conviction, concentrated on a group of marketers and their associates who operated out of Houston and trafficked cocaine and heroin across the United States using frequent drug sources in Mexico. These individuals were generally Dominican Republic citizens.

Gonzalez worked for the drug smuggling group by moving heroin to other states like Virginia from the Dallas and Houston locations. He received heroin shipping and delivered it to his customers using the moving company owned by his son-in-law.

The protection made an effort to persuade the judge that he was an honorable, hard-working man trying to support his family and that his son-in-law had set him up. They rejected those assertions and found Gonzalez to be guilty of the charges.

Gonzalez will continue to be held in custody while his move to a facility run by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons is being considered. He is anticipated to go through elimination transactions after being released from prison.

The Houston Police Department provided assistance for the inquiry. The case is being prosecuted by associate U.S. attorney Kenneth Cusick.
